Oct 26 to 30 weekly setups: gold's 4.08% drop, Fed Wednesday, four central banks in one week

Gold fell 4.08% last week and closed at 3995.21. It swung from a high at 4190.31 down to a low at 3975.33, so the whole handle changed in a week. It trades near 3996.90 now.

This week is about Wednesday. The Fed decides at 2:00 PM ET, the forecast is a hold at 4%, and the 2:30 press conference usually moves markets more than the statement does. Wednesday also carries a UK budget and a BoC decision, then Thursday brings Core PCE and GDP at 8:30 AM ET, with the ECB at 9:15 and the BoJ late that night. Every market below gets last week's open, high, low and close, its own calendar and the levels to watch.

The week at a glance

Market Friday close Week Last week's low / high What decides the week
Gold 3,995.21 -4.08% 3,975.33 / 4,190.31 The Fed Wednesday and whether 3975.33 holds decide the week.
EUR/USD 1.1193 -0.53% 1.1193 / 1.1234 Two central banks in two days, and 1.1193 already gave way.
GBP/USD 1.3368 +0.25% 1.3330 / 1.3402 The Autumn Budget and the Fed, with 1.3402 the line to beat.
USD/JPY 156.80 -0.77% 156.80 / 158.24 The Fed and the BoJ, with 156.8 holding as the floor.
USD/CAD 1.3995 -1.17% 1.3995 / 1.4074 Two central banks Wednesday, then PCE. The spread decides direction.
USD/CHF 0.8244 +0.05% 0.8220 / 0.8250 Flat week, Fed Wednesday. Support below decides if the reversal has legs.
AUD/USD 0.7022 +0.91% 0.6985 / 0.7034 Australian CPI Tuesday night, then the Fed. Can bulls hold 0.7022?
NZD/USD 0.5687 +0.41% 0.5672 / 0.5692 RBNZ Tuesday night sets the tone before the Fed does.
Bitcoin 80,500 -1.85% 80,500 / 84,082 The Fed decision and whether buyers defend last week's low

Closes are last week's, 19 to 23 October: CoinGecko daily closes at 00:00 UTC; Dukascopy 1-minute bid candles; ECB reference rates via Frankfurter, one close per day. FX rates are one reference close per day, so the weekly high and low are the highest and lowest daily closes, not intraday extremes. The week-ahead times are New York time (ET).

GoldGold breaks lower into a Fed week that could decide the next leg

Gold opened at 4184.58 and closed at 3995.21. That's a 4.08% fall. The week left price at a fresh three-month low (FXStreet), and sellers kept leaning on it after an earlier break that a few had already flagged as the next crack in the floor (investingLive).

Last week (19 to 23 Oct) Open High Low Close Change
Gold 4,184.58 4,190.31 3,975.33 3,995.21 -4.08%

What moved it

Price sits pinned right ahead of the Fed, and the drop has traders split on whether this is the opening move of a deeper slide or just a flush before a bounce (TradingKey). One read says support is holding and a breakout is close (StoneX). Bears still run it (www.tmgm.com).

The week ahead

This is a heavy US week and gold sits in the middle of it. Everything routes through Wednesday.

Day Time (ET) Release Forecast / previous Why it matters
Wed 28 2:00 PM ET USD Fed Interest Rate Decision 4% / 4% The rate call is held at 4% on forecast, so the tone of the statement matters more than the number itself.
Wed 28 2:30 PM ET USD Fed Press Conference - Thirty minutes later the press conference is where gold usually finds its move, in the Q and A more than the release.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD Core PCE Price Index MoM 0.3% / 0.2% Core PCE at 0.3% forecast against 0.2% prior is the Fed's own inflation gauge, and a hot print feeds the higher-for-longer story.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD GDP Growth Rate QoQ Adv 3% / 2.2% Thursday's first GDP read is forecast at 3% versus 2.2%, a strong number that makes rate cuts harder to argue for gold.

Levels

Resistance sits at last week's high at 4190.31, with last week's open at 4184.58 just below it. Support is last week's low at 3975.33, and last week's close at 3995.21 sits just under where price trades now.

Lose last week's low at 3975.33 on a close and that level flips into a ceiling price has to climb back through before any recovery looks real. Reclaim last week's open at 4184.58 and the breakdown look fades.

Bottom line. Gold goes into the Fed on the back foot, with last week's low at 3975.33 still untested as support. Wednesday's statement and Thursday's PCE and GDP decide whether this is a pause or the next leg down.

EUR/USDEUR/USD closes at its lows with the Fed and ECB both on deck

The euro gave up ground and finished on its lows. It opened at 1.1225 and closed at 1.1193, down 0.53%. That's a fresh low going back to May 2025 (investingLive), and the one real attempt to turn higher on the week stalled before it could build into anything (FOREX.com).

Last week (19 to 23 Oct) Open High Low Close Change
EUR/USD 1.1225 1.1234 1.1193 1.1193 -0.53%

What moved it

The bigger driver here is the dollar. Unrest in France keeps a weight on the euro too (TradingView). When US assets wobble the single currency catches some air, but the floor under the dollar has held firm enough that each bounce runs out of road before it reaches anything that matters (StoneX).

The week ahead

Two central banks, two days. The Fed Wednesday, the ECB Thursday, with US data wrapped around both.

Day Time (ET) Release Forecast / previous Why it matters
Wed 28 2:00 PM ET USD Fed Interest Rate Decision 4% / 4% The Fed is seen on hold at 4%, so the statement's tone drives this pair's dollar leg more than the decision.
Thu 29 9:15 AM ET EUR ECB Interest Rate Decision 2.65% / 2.65% The ECB is forecast to hold at 2.65%, so Lagarde's tone on growth and inflation does the real moving here.
Thu 29 9:45 AM ET EUR ECB Press Conference - The press conference is where the euro side of this pair actually trades, in the tone Lagarde sets on the next steps.
Fri 30 6:00 AM ET EUR GDP Growth Rate QoQ Flash 0.2% / 0.6% Friday's Eurozone GDP flash is seen at 0.2% against 0.6% prior, a slowdown that leaves the euro little to stand on.

Levels

Resistance is last week's high at 1.1234, with last week's open at 1.1225 just under it. Support is last week's low at 1.1193, exactly where the week closed.

Close back above last week's open at 1.1225 and the failed-low look starts to ease. Lose 1.1193 with any conviction and there's not much left on the chart to lean on, with the May 2025 low already behind it [h5].

Bottom line. The euro heads into a double-header of rate decisions sitting on its lows, and the dollar is still the one in charge of this pair. Watch the Fed tone Wednesday and Lagarde Thursday, because Friday's GDP flash only confirms what those two set up.

GBP/USDGBP/USD grinds higher into the UK Budget and the Fed, bid but capped

Cable held up. It was the one major to end the week in the green. Price opened at 1.333, closed at 1.3368, up 0.25%, and the open doubled as the week's low. A softer dollar and firmer UK data did the work (FOREX.com). Then price cleared its 100-day average on the way up (investingLive).

Last week (19 to 23 Oct) Open High Low Close Change
GBP/USD 1.3330 1.3402 1.3330 1.3368 +0.25%

What moved it

The story underneath cuts two ways. The dollar has loosened its grip while traders warm to the idea the Bank of England might tighten again (Investing.com). Chart readers have liked the bounce off the lows (Barchart.com). None of it gets a real test until the Budget and the Fed are out of the way.

The week ahead

Sterling carries its own risk on top of the US calendar. The Autumn Budget lands Wednesday morning, hours before the Fed.

Day Time (ET) Release Forecast / previous Why it matters
Wed 28 8:30 AM ET GBP Autumn Budget 2026 - The Autumn Budget is the pound's own event Wednesday, and fiscal plans can move sterling hard whatever the Fed does later.
Wed 28 2:00 PM ET USD Fed Interest Rate Decision 4% / 4% The Fed is seen holding at 4%, and since cable's run leaned on dollar weakness, a hawkish tone is the main threat.
Wed 28 2:30 PM ET USD Fed Press Conference - The press conference later is where any dollar move gets its legs, so watch the Q and A over the statement.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD Core PCE Price Index MoM 0.3% / 0.2% Core PCE Thursday at 0.3% against 0.2% prior is the inflation read that decides whether the dollar's bounce has fuel.

Levels

Resistance is last week's high at 1.3402, the level that capped the rally. Support is last week's low at 1.333, which is also where the week opened.

Clear 1.3402 and the recovery gets a second wind. Slip back under 1.333 and the whole bounce reads as a false start that leaned on a soft dollar and little else.

Bottom line. Cable goes in on the front foot, the only major that gained last week, but it has a Budget and a Fed to clear before that counts for much. Hold 1.333 and the bid stays intact; lose it and the UK story needs a rethink.

USD/JPYUSD/JPY slides to its lows as a soft dollar meets a Fed-BoJ week

Here the dollar lost ground and the pair went with it. USD/JPY opened at 158.24, also the high, and closed at 156.8, the low, down 0.77%. First weekly fall in a while. The whole move read as pressure on the dollar more than any real bid for the yen, which still can't find buyers even on a week built to help it (The Dark Side Of The Boom).

Last week (19 to 23 Oct) Open High Low Close Change
USD/JPY 158.24 158.24 156.80 156.80 -0.77%

What moved it

The yen stays unloved even with the dollar on the back foot (investingLive). Inflation at home is nudging the Bank of Japan toward a move, though a hawkish Fed could still knock the legs from under any yen bounce before it starts (XTB.com). The pair has been coiling. Ranges like that tend to end with one fast move (TradingView).

The week ahead

This one gets both central banks, hours apart. The Fed Wednesday afternoon, the BoJ late Thursday your time.

Day Time (ET) Release Forecast / previous Why it matters
Wed 28 2:00 PM ET USD Fed Interest Rate Decision 4% / 4% The Fed is seen on hold at 4%, and a hawkish tone hands the dollar back the edge this pair just lost.
Thu 29 11:00 PM ET JPY BoJ Interest Rate Decision 1.25% / 1.25% The BoJ is forecast to hold at 1.25%, so the yen's move hangs on whether the bank hints a hike is close.
Thu 29 11:00 PM ET JPY BoJ Quarterly Outlook Report - The quarterly outlook lands with the decision, and its inflation view is where the market reads the BoJ's real intent.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD Core PCE Price Index MoM 0.3% / 0.2% Core PCE at 0.3% against 0.2% prior sits between the two decisions and can swing the dollar leg of this pair.

Levels

Resistance is last week's high at 158.24, which was also the week's open. Support is last week's low at 156.8, where the week closed.

Hold 156.8 and the pair is just resting after the drop. Lose it and the soft-dollar story gets its next leg down, with the topside everyone keeps watching still capped for now [h4].

Bottom line. USD/JPY closed the week on its lows, dragged lower by a soft dollar while the yen stayed quiet through the whole move. With both the Fed and the BoJ due, 156.8 is the line that calls the next leg.

USD/CADUSD/CAD drops to last week's low as BoC and Fed share one Wednesday

The pair opened the week at 1.4074, which was also as high as it got, and closed right on its low at 1.3995, down 1.17%. The loonie did the pushing, and the pullback landed ahead of Canada's inflation read (FXStreet). Even after that drop, one view still has the rally eyeing yearly highs (StoneX).

Last week (19 to 23 Oct) Open High Low Close Change
USD/CAD 1.4074 1.4074 1.3995 1.3995 -1.17%

What moved it

Barchart still expects the pair to grind lower into its support zone (Barchart.com), while the shorter tape has been trending lower since last Wednesday's peak (investingLive). So the question is simple. Is this just a pause before the uptrend resumes (FXStreet), or the start of something that hands the loonie back the wheel (Baystreet.ca)?

The week ahead

Wednesday is the whole week. Two rate decisions, hours apart, then inflation on Thursday.

Day Time (ET) Release Forecast / previous Why it matters
Wed 28 9:45 AM ET CAD BoC Interest Rate Decision 2.5% / 2.25% Forecast 2.5% versus 2.25% prior points to a hike, which would hand the loonie fresh reason to press lower.
Wed 28 2:00 PM ET USD Fed Interest Rate Decision 4% / 4% Held at 4% is the base case, so the statement tone and how it reads next to the BoC matters most.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD Core PCE Price Index MoM 0.3% / 0.2% Forecast 0.3% against 0.2% prior. The Fed's preferred inflation gauge, and it drops the day after the decision.
Fri 30 8:30 AM ET CAD GDP MoM 0.2% / 0% Forecast 0.2% versus 0% prior. A growth pickup would back the loonie and keep pressure on the pair into the weekend.

Levels

Last week's high at 1.4074, which was also the open, caps the first push higher. Last week's low at 1.3995 is also where it closed, so bulls and bears start the week on the same line.

A clean break under 1.3995 says the dollar's grip is finally slipping. Back above 1.4074 and the dip was just noise.

Bottom line. Price sits right on last week's low with two central banks and PCE in the same week. Let Wednesday set the tone before you trust either side.

USD/CHFUSD/CHF stalls flat as the Fed meets and major support waits below

Barely a move. The pair opened at 0.825, printed that as the week's high, and closed at 0.8244 for a 0.05% gain. The bigger story sits on the weekly chart, which just rolled over after seven straight weeks up near the year's highs (StoneX).

Last week (19 to 23 Oct) Open High Low Close Change
USD/CHF 0.8250 0.8250 0.8220 0.8244 +0.05%

What moved it

FOREX.com says this turn lower drags attention back to the big support zone underneath (FOREX.com), and after Friday's surge traders are still arguing whether it was the dollar or the data (TradingKey). For now the pair is consolidating after a sharp fall, waiting for the next shove (investingLive).

The week ahead

Most of the fuel is American, but Switzerland has a speech and a survey to close the week.

Day Time (ET) Release Forecast / previous Why it matters
Wed 28 2:00 PM ET USD Fed Interest Rate Decision 4% / 4% A hold at 4% is expected, so the franc trade hangs on the statement tone and whether the dollar finds any support.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD Core PCE Price Index MoM 0.3% / 0.2% Forecast 0.3% from 0.2% prior. A hot print the day after the Fed could hand the dollar the support it has lacked.
Thu 29 1:30 PM ET CHF SNB Tschudin Speech - An SNB voice late Thursday. With Swiss rates already low, any hint on policy moves the franc more than the calendar suggests.
Fri 30 4:00 AM ET CHF KOF Leading Indicators 106.9 / 109.1 Forecast 106.9 against 109.1 prior, a step down. A soft Swiss read into the weekend leans against the franc.

Levels

Last week's high at 0.825, which doubles as the open, is the first ceiling to clear. Last week's low at 0.822 is the line the reversal story leans on.

Lose 0.822 and the talk of major support below gets real [h2]. Reclaim 0.825 and the flat week was just a pause.

Bottom line. A week that went nowhere leaves the pair pinned between 0.825 and 0.822 into the Fed. The first clean break out of that band is the one worth respecting.

AUD/USDAUD/USD climbs 0.91% but last week's high still blocks the way

The Aussie had the best week of this group. It opened at 0.6986, pushed to a high of 0.7034, and closed at 0.7022 for a 0.91% gain. Buyers have pushed price back up against the moving-average cluster they keep challenging (FXStreet), and record short bets still hang over the tape (FOREX.com).

Last week (19 to 23 Oct) Open High Low Close Change
AUD/USD 0.6986 0.7034 0.6985 0.7022 +0.91%

What moved it

The recovery already ran into the 100-day moving average and stalled (investingLive), and the wider call is that bounces like this keep running into resistance (Investing.com). So the read is honest. The Aussie is consolidating gains (Continuum Economics), and record shorts could fire a squeeze or mark a sentiment extreme (FOREX.com).

The week ahead

Tuesday night Sydney time is the one that matters here. Australian inflation lands before the Fed does.

Day Time (ET) Release Forecast / previous Why it matters
Tue 27 8:30 PM ET AUD Inflation Rate MoM 0.7% / 0.4% Forecast 0.7% against 0.4% prior. A hot monthly print pushes back on near-term RBA cuts and gives the Aussie a lift.
Tue 27 8:30 PM ET AUD Inflation Rate YoY 4.2% / 4% Forecast 4.2% from 4% prior. Annual inflation running higher keeps the RBA boxed in and tends to favour the currency.
Wed 28 2:00 PM ET USD Fed Interest Rate Decision 4% / 4% A hold at 4% is priced, so the dollar's reaction to the statement decides how much room the Aussie keeps.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD Core PCE Price Index MoM 0.3% / 0.2% Forecast 0.3% versus 0.2% prior. A firm US inflation read the next day can pull the dollar back and cap the pair.

Levels

Last week's high at 0.7034 is the ceiling, and it lines up with the moving-average cluster bulls keep testing [h6]. Last week's low at 0.6985 sits right next to the open at 0.6986, so that pocket is the floor bulls need to defend.

Hold 0.6985 through the CPI and Fed and the trend break stays alive [h1]. Lose it and the bounce was corrective, just as the bears argue [h5].

Bottom line. The Aussie did the work last week. The hard part is holding it through its own CPI and the Fed in one stretch, so watch 0.7034 above and 0.6985 below.

NZD/USDNZD/USD grinds to a fresh high with the RBNZ on deck Tuesday

Quiet gain for the kiwi. It opened at 0.5672, which was also the week's low, ran up to 0.5692 and closed at 0.5687, up 0.41%. That stretched it to a new high since late September (investingLive), helped by a softer dollar more than anything homegrown (TradingKey).

Last week (19 to 23 Oct) Open High Low Close Change
NZD/USD 0.5672 0.5692 0.5672 0.5687 +0.41%

What moved it

One desk still argues there is more in this bounce (Continuum Economics), while the broader view warns bounces like this are starting to stall (Investing.com). So the tension is clear. Buyers want a fresh leg. Sellers keep pressing toward the key lows to see if they break (investingLive).

The week ahead

Two central banks bracket the week for the kiwi, with the RBNZ first and the Fed right behind.

Day Time (ET) Release Forecast / previous Why it matters
Tue 27 9:00 PM ET NZD RBNZ Interest Rate Decision 3% / 2.75% Forecast 3% against 2.75% prior points to a hike. A firmer RBNZ would hand the kiwi a reason to extend the bounce.
Wed 28 2:00 PM ET USD Fed Interest Rate Decision 4% / 4% A hold at 4% is the base case, so the dollar's read of the statement matters more here than the number.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD Core PCE Price Index MoM 0.3% / 0.2% Forecast 0.3% from 0.2% prior. A firm US inflation print the next day can revive the dollar and cap the kiwi.
Wed 28 8:00 PM ET NZD ANZ Business Confidence 51.9 Previous read was 51.9. A soft local survey after the RBNZ could take some shine off the kiwi into month end.

Levels

Last week's high at 0.5692 is the ceiling, the new high the kiwi just stretched to [h1]. Last week's low at 0.5672 is also the open, so that is the floor the bounce has to hold.

Clear 0.5692 on the RBNZ or the Fed and the fresh-high story keeps running. Lose 0.5672 and the sellers pressing the lows get their break [h7].

Bottom line. The kiwi closed near its high with its own central bank and the Fed stacked into one week. Let 0.5692 and 0.5672 frame it, and give the break a close before you believe it.

BitcoinBitcoin closes the week on its lows with the Fed in front of it

Bitcoin opened at 81875 and closed at 80500, down 1.85 percent on the week. It finished right on its low, so no bounce into Friday. An early-week push toward last week's high at 84082 (Bitcoin Foundation) faded, and reports that recent buyers sat near break-even point to why rallies kept failing (Yahoo Finance).

Last week (19 to 23 Oct) Open High Low Close Change
Bitcoin 81,875 84,082 80,500 80,500 -1.85%

What moved it

The bigger pull is still the dollar and rates. JPMorgan put out a long-term forecast that has Bitcoin outperforming the other big asset classes, though it comes with a catch (Forbes) (Bitcoin Magazine). That is a story for years, not this week, and near-term money stays cautious while volatility cools against euro-dollar (CoinDesk).

The week ahead

This week belongs to the Fed and the inflation print right after. Both land midweek into Thursday, and both move risk fast.

Day Time (ET) Release Forecast / previous Why it matters
Wed 28 2:00 PM ET USD Fed Interest Rate Decision 4% / 4% Rates are seen held at 4 percent against a previous 4 percent, so the move comes from the statement not the number.
Wed 28 2:30 PM ET USD Fed Press Conference - The press conference that follows is where the tone gets set, and risk assets like Bitcoin trade the guidance.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD Core PCE Price Index MoM 0.3% / 0.2% Core PCE is seen at 0.3 percent versus 0.2 percent prior, and a hot read lifts the dollar and pressures Bitcoin.
Thu 29 8:30 AM ET USD GDP Growth Rate QoQ Adv 3% / 2.2% First-cut GDP is seen at 3 percent, up from 2.2 percent, and a strong economy keeps rate cuts off the table.

Levels

Resistance sits at last week's high at 84082, with last week's open at 81875 the first lid above the close. Support is last week's low at 80500, which is also where the week closed, so bulls have nothing under them.

Lose 80500 on a closing basis and this week's sellers stay in charge. Reclaim 81875 and then 84082 and the break-even selling starts to ease [h1].

Bottom line. Bitcoin goes into Fed week sitting on its low with buyers underwater. What the Fed says on Wednesday, then Thursday's PCE, decides whether 80500 holds or gives way.
