NFP October 2026: A Cooler Jobs Forecast and Gold's 8:30 Hour

By Emanuele Calcina · Published 26 September 2026 · Gold reaction measured on Dukascopy hourly data · Our news-day rules

100,000. That's the payrolls forecast for the September jobs report, and it lands Friday 2 October at 8:30 AM ET. That would be a step down from the 162,000 the month before. The unemployment rate is seen ticking up to 4.2% from 4.1%. Here is why the hour matters. Across the seven NFP releases we measured on Dukascopy hourly data, gold's release hour ran a median of $71, about 3.7 times the size of a normal hour. Two hours later gold was higher four times and lower three. This print lands with yields up and the dollar firm, and gold near its worst week in a month on a hawkish Fed read (fxstreet.com) (Reuters).

What the September jobs report is expected to show

The headline number carries the weight. Payrolls are forecast at 100,000 for September, down from 162,000 the month before. That is the slowdown the market is watching. At the same 8:30 AM ET stamp, the unemployment rate is seen rising to 4.2% from 4.1%. Average hourly earnings come with it, running at 3.1% year over year and 0.3% month over month last time, with no forecast published for either. Wage growth still gets read closely, since it feeds the inflation debate that has kept a hawkish Fed in the headlines (Bloomberg.com).

Right now the backdrop leans against gold. Yields have surged and the dollar is firm, with rate hike bets keeping bullion capped (fxstreet.com) (VT Markets). Gold is eyeing its worst week in a month on a higher-for-longer read (fxstreet.com) (CNBC). Spot sits near $4286 as we write. A jobs number that lands soft could feed the slowdown story, while a hot one hands the hawks more room. Either way, this print drops into a market already primed to move (FOREX.com).

How gold moved on the last jobs prints

Here is what our measurement shows. Across seven NFP releases from 11 February to 4 September, the release-hour range ran a median of $71 on Dukascopy hourly data. That is about 3.7 times the $19 a normal weekday hour gives us. The widest was 4 September, when the hour spanned $101.50 after payrolls came in at 162,000 against a 56,000 forecast. The tightest of the bunch was 8 May at $30. So the size varies, but the release hour almost always runs hot compared with a quiet session.

Direction is the harder part. Two hours after the print, gold was higher four times and lower three across the set. The moves cut both ways. On 5 June, after a beat, gold was down about $105 two hours later. On 2 July, after a miss, it was up about $72. And 6 March, the month payrolls printed negative at -92,000, saw gold up roughly $47. A big surprise did not always push price the way a textbook would.

Release Actual Forecast Gold range, release hour Gold move, 2 hours
4 Sep 2026 162K 56K $101.50 -$53.90
7 Aug 2026 -23K 80K $70.90 +$27.10
2 Jul 2026 57K 110K $79.20 +$71.50
5 Jun 2026 172K 85K $71.00 -$104.80
8 May 2026 115K 62K $30.00 +$29.90
3 Apr 2026 178K 60K - -
6 Mar 2026 -92K 59K $65.60 +$47.10
11 Feb 2026 130K 70K $71.80 -$24.00

No reading for 3 Apr 2026: spot gold was not trading in that hour (market holiday).

Measured on Dukascopy XAUUSD hourly candles, 11 Feb 2026 to 4 Sep 2026. The median release hour covered $71.00 against $19.40 for the same hour on a normal weekday. Two hours later gold was higher 4 times and lower 3 times.

Three ways the jobs number can land

Start with a hot one. If payrolls beat the 100,000 forecast by a clear margin, the read tends to be more room for a hawkish Fed. That usually lifts yields and the dollar, and gold often leans lower into that. An unemployment rate below 4.2% would point the same way. Now the in-line case. If payrolls land near 100,000 and the unemployment rate sits at 4.2%, the number can pass without a clean signal, and gold may just track yields and the dollar from there (VT Markets).

Then the cool one. If payrolls come in well under 100,000, or the unemployment rate pushes above 4.2%, the slowdown story gets louder. That can pull yields and the dollar back, which often gives gold room to lift. Wages matter too. A hotter earnings number can complicate a soft headline, since it keeps the inflation side of the debate alive (Bloomberg.com). None of this is a promise. Our own data shows the first reaction and the two-hour move do not always agree.

When the number lands in your timezone

Set your clock first. The number drops at 8:30 AM ET on Friday 2 October. For traders in New York and Toronto that is 8:30 AM. London gets it at 1:30 PM. Madrid, Rome and Amsterdam see it at 2:30 PM. Dubai is at 4:30 PM, and India at 6:00 PM. So most of Europe is mid-afternoon and the Gulf is late afternoon when the print hits. If you trade the London or European session, this lands right in the middle of your screen time.

The hour before tends to go quiet and thin. Books get lighter as desks step back ahead of the print. Then 8:30 AM ET arrives and the release hour runs, a median of $71 on our data and as wide as $101.50 on 4 September. Spreads widen right around the number, so the screen can look worse than the real market for a beat. The first candle often whips both ways before it settles. Give the dust an hour to clear and the picture usually reads cleaner.

City Release time Day
New York 8:30 AM Fri 2 Oct
London 1:30 PM Fri 2 Oct

Toronto 8:30 AM Fri 2 Oct

How our desk handles the jobs report

Our approach here is simple and it does not change. We take no new entries in the run-up to the print. There is no edge in guessing the number, and the spread punishes anyone who tries. If a trade is already running into the release, its stop sits outside the expected range for the hour. That means room for a $71 median move, and awareness the hour can stretch past $100 like it did on 4 September. The point is to survive the noise, not to predict it.

After the print, we do not treat the first move as the move. Price often lunges one way, then reverses once the full report is read. Our own numbers back that up, with gold higher four times and lower three two hours out. So we let the release hour breathe. Spreads settle and the fake-outs shake loose, and the trend that sticks usually shows its hand later. Patience beats speed on a day like this. The number is not going anywhere.

The short version

So here is the shape of it. Payrolls forecast at 100,000, down from 162,000, with the unemployment rate seen at 4.2%, landing 8:30 AM ET on Friday 2 October. The backdrop is hawkish, yields are up and the dollar is firm, and gold has been on the back foot into the week (Reuters) (Yahoo Finance). Our data says the release hour runs about 3.7 times a normal one, and direction after two hours has been close to a coin flip. Respect the range and give the dust time to clear before the market shows its hand. The plan matters more than the guess on a day like this.

Questions traders asked

What time is the October 2026 jobs report released?

The September jobs report lands Friday 2 October 2026 at 8:30 AM ET. That is 1:30 PM in London, 2:30 PM in Madrid, Rome and Amsterdam, 4:30 PM in Dubai, and 6:00 PM in India. Toronto matches New York at 8:30 AM.

What is the NFP forecast for September?

Payrolls are forecast at 100,000, down from 162,000 the month before. The unemployment rate is seen rising to 4.2% from 4.1%. There is no published forecast for average hourly earnings, which ran at 3.1% year over year and 0.3% month over month last time.

How much does gold usually move on NFP?

On our Dukascopy hourly data across seven releases, gold's release hour ran a median of $71, about 3.7 times a normal weekday hour of $19. The widest was $101.50 on 4 September. Two hours after the print, gold was higher four times and lower three.

Should I trade the jobs report?

That is your call and your risk. Our desk takes no new entries in the run-up, keeps any running trade's stop outside the expected range, and does not treat the first move after the 8:30 AM ET print as the real move. Spreads widen around the number, so many traders wait for the release hour to settle.

Trading gold on margin carries a high level of risk and you can lose more than your deposit. Nothing on this page is a personal recommendation. Past reactions to a release do not predict the next one.
